Concrete Scanning

Scan Concrete Before You Cut

21 May 2026 · Gulf Cut UAE

What a concrete scan is looking for

Concrete scanning in Dubai is done before someone commits to a hole or a saw cut. The scan looks for rebar, electrical conduits, water pipes and post-tension cables hidden in the slab or wall. Those items are rarely where a furniture layout says they are.

Rebar can often be cut if the engineer accepts it. A post-tension cable cannot. Striking a live tendon in a Dubai slab is a structural emergency, not a patching job. Scanning is how you avoid that.

When to scan a slab or a wall

Scan before core drilling for MEP, before a wall saw opening in an existing tower, and before any cut in a post-tensioned podium or transfer slab. Also scan when the as-built drawings are missing, which is common on older buildings in Deira, Bur Dubai and villa communities.

Three-dimensional slab scanning is useful when several services cross the same bay and the driller needs a clear pocket, not just a single bar location.

Scan, mark, then cut

The useful result is a mark on the concrete, not only a report. Gulf Cut can scan and then carry out the core drilling or saw cutting on the agreed line. That keeps the person who found the cable and the person who has to miss it on the same visit.

If you already have a scanning report from another firm, send it with the drawing. If you do not, book the scan with the cutting. Call +971 50 596 2816.

Questions we get on site

Does scanning damage the concrete?

No. Scanning reads the slab from the surface. The concrete is only cut after the marks are agreed.

Can you scan a slab that is already tiled?

Often yes, through tiles and thin finishes. Thick build-ups and foil-backed insulation can weaken the reading. Tell us the floor build-up.

Is scanning required on every small hole?

It is the safe default in post-tensioned slabs and wherever drawings are incomplete. On a known, lightly reinforced wall a small hole may not need a full scan, but the risk should be stated before drilling.
